If you’ve travelled around northeast Iowa, you’ve likely visited the scenic lookout in Lansing known as Mount Hosmer. What you likely don’t know is the intriguing story of the woman that the river bluff is named for. Far ahead of her time, Harriet Hosmer was a woman who survived childhood tragedy to become America’s most famous female sculptor of the 19th century. Through her story of determination and persistence, Harriet reminds us of the need to stretch beyond cultural limitations and social restraints and live our own truth.
